Our History

Cahaba Hospice was started in 1996 by Richard and Barbara Ware. Barbara previously worked as a critical care nurse, and it was in this position that the idea of Cahaba Hospice formed in her mind.

“At the hospital, I saw so many people who would have been much better off, much more comfortable, if they had been at home for their last days,” Barbara said.

Witnessing this again and again led Barbara to create a way for terminally patients to live out their days in comfort, dignity and privacy. Thus Cahaba Hospice was born.

Cahaba Hospice has grown slowly and carefully over the past six years, and we have chosen team members that share our views on death and dying and our focus on the life remaining. Our staff has a deep understanding of the psychological aspects as well as the physical aspects of terminal illness.

Our Vision

In the cold, clinical atmosphere of a hospital, only a patient’s physical needs are met. Cahaba Hospice meets these needs too, but at the same time, meets the spiritual and emotional needs that often become even more important at the end of life. We strive to give families needed direction in this difficult time and help them view their loved one as the same person they have always been so that they can enjoy their time left together.

The mission of Cahaba Hospice is to ensure quality of life and a comfortable, peaceful death for all patients receiving our care, and to provide support for their loved ones. We will serve everyone in our communities who needs and seeks our care, and we are dedicated to improving end-of-life care.

Our Values

Cahaba Hospice believes in making a positive difference in the lives of terminally ill patients and their families. We believe that our level of compassionate care can do just that. Every patient served by Cahaba Hospice would not be the same without us.

We work together as a team because we believe that teamwork provides the best opportunity for successful outcomes.

Cahaba Hospice’s Values are:

  • Acceptance of dying as a natural part of living.
  • Dignity of each individual.
  • Expertise and Compassion in care.
  • Hope for emotional and spiritual well being in patients and their families.
  • Integrity in everything we do.
